Happy Thanksgiving

By: Katrina

Thanksgiving is a Special time for all of us to reflect and realize how thankful we are for all of the wonderful things in our lives. Economically times are tough! We may have to tighten up our belts a bit, but as Americans we have so much to be thankful for.

Fall at Legendary Farms

When you sit down at the dinner table tomorrow on this glorious day, remember as Americans the freedoms we have the ability to speak our beliefs, vote for our favored political candidates, follow the teachings of our religion, pursue an occupation of our choosing, and enjoy our hobbies.

Fall at Legendary Farms

Be thankful this day for your health, having food to nourish your bodies and your family. Be thankful this day for our troops who put their lives on the line so that we can all be free.

Fall at Legendary Farms

My occupation is a banker and you can imagine I see negative economic news every day. But I am very optimistic that this will be an event of the past just like other downturns we have experienced.

Fall at Legendary Farms

Enjoy this wonderful Thanksgiving and remember we live in the greatest country in the world, and don’t forget to hug your precious donkey.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Lucille; GO TO SLEEP!

Lucile If she can’t eat, you can’t sleep!

If you are a regular reader you have already heard of Lucille. If not, she is Katrina’s cat; not our car; KATRINA’S cat. She will have little to do with me and often looks at me with great disgust and wonders why Katrina lets me stay in the house. If Lucille was a human I am convinced she could be a serial killer. She is the only bi-polar cat I have ever seen.

One minute she is sweet and gentle (to Katrina, not me) and the next she is a witch! She is at her most extreme when her food bowl is getting low on food.

Our two cats, Lucille and Linus, are used to having a bowl with food in it at all times. This makes it easy for them and simplifies our lives when we can’t be at home for their regular feeding time. For the most part they will graze on the bowl all day long and eat just a little at any one sitting. However, Lucille has one terrible flaw.

She is very controlling and can’t stand it when her food bowl begins to get low. The cats eat out of one of those clear plastic jugs that is filled with food and inverted over a feed bowl. As they eat the food falls down into the bowl ensuring they always have food. When Lucille sees that the food is getting low in the jug she goes into her “Aren’t I Cute and Loving” mode. She will begin to purr and rub up against Katrina, she will seek out attention. This is the only time she will do it. If she is loving, the food is getting low.

Katrina loves to milk this for all it is worth. She enjoys having Lucille pay her attention. The rub is, if you don’t fill her food bowl before you go to bed she gets even.

Last night was one of those times. I needed to get up at 5:00 a.m. to catch a flight to California for work and really needed a good nights sleep. Katrina forgot to give Lucille food so she let us get to sleep and then it began.

Every time this happens, Lucille let’s us get deep into a sleep and then begins to run around the bedroom making as much noise as possible. She sticks her claws out and walks on the carpet; it sounds like she is scratching her claws on a tree next to your head. Then she bounces over to the small metal blinds on the glass doors out to the deck and begins to hit them with her paws. The sound is like a xylophone being played by a 2 year old. If that doesn’t work she will scamper across the bed on the pillows directly above our heads stopping at the night stand to knock off what ever she can find.

Last night she was playing piano on the door blinds; I looked up from my pillow and reached for a shoe to throw at her; I looked her straight in the eyes and I could read what she was thinking. If she could talk she said, “You see me you lazy oaf, get up and get me some food.” With that said she scampered off before I could reach a shoe. The concert of annoyance continued all night.

When we could take no more Katrina got up, went to the garage and brought in a full jug of food for the little control freak. At that point it was time to get up anyway.

We showered, dressed and headed out the door. As we looked back Lucille was sound asleep on the bed, her tummy full. She won again.

How to Beat Today’s Stress and Depression

Miniature Donkeys and Katrina

Stress Relief

By Katrina

Whether you read the newspapers, watch the evening news or surf the headlines on the Internet, the economic and financial news is very bleak. Unemployment levels are high, foreclosures continue to rise, housing starts have plummeted, consumer debt delinquencies are on the increase and the stock market is at levels not seen for years. And on top of the gloomy financial news, we have issues in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Darfur, etc. If all that wasn’t enough to get you down we are at the final stages of a Presidential election and two men, one of whom will be our Country’s next leader, seem intent on destroying the reputation of the opposing candidate before our very eyes. How on earth are we suppose to feel good about our future with such pessimism constantly blasted at us?

Miniature Donkeys and Katrina

THE NEWS IS JUST OVERWHELMING!

I guess Dick and I are optimists. We have had economic problems in the past, and with time, this too will be an event of the past.

We each have our medicine for stress. Some people use alcohol while others may use pills. Dick (more…)

Cats Rule: at least in our home!

Linus

I don’t have many rules; at least I don’t think so. One that I do have is no cats in my office. One rule Katrina has is Dick has no rules. I hate cat hairs on my keyboard and on my desk. Katrina likes her animals any where any time.

When I am in my office, door open, door shut makes no difference the cats stay clear. Katrina comes home, walks in my office and the cats march in behind her like she is there secret weapon and protector (which she is).

Lucille will look at me with great disdain and flaunt her superiority every time. I have learned that if I give her the evil eye it might slow her down but if I get out of my chair she will bolt for the door.

She is getting braver. Now when Katrina is not home she will come up to the very top step outside my door (more…)

Introducing Dolly, What A Great Dog!

Dolly

DOLLY

By: Dick

When we left California right after January 1st we looked a little like a modern day Noah and his diesel burning 36 foot arc on wheels. We were in our motor home with cages of numerous doves, three dogs, two cats and a lot of Tylenol! It’s a 2,000 mile journey with natural enemies next to each other. The cats were in cat carriers staring through the openings at doves in bird cages. The dogs were in dog crates next to the cats. All we needed were a few monkeys swinging from the curtains! Since it was January there wasn’t much talk about taking long walks.

We surprised everyone and arrived in Tennessee without incident. Since then our animal family quickly began to grow. First there was Dolly. The best dog we have ever owned. She was running wild in the neighborhood, the result of some one’s decision to abandon a wonderful animal. She was left to fend for herself and beg or catch food as she could.

Although hesitant at first, we soon (more…)

Hitler would have loved Lucille!

In this picture Lucile looks so innocent, that is how she kills so many rolls of toilet paper, they never saw her coming!

Lucy

Lucile is one of our two cats. Katrina went to the pound and fell in love with a cat. She called and asked if it was ok to bring the little boy cat home. Of course I said wait, I want to see what this animal looks like. My plan was if I give her time to think about it and she thinks I am coming over to give her a hard time she will just go home and forget all about it. Well, I showed up and I fell in love with a little girl cat.

That is how we left the pound with two cats instead of one. Linus the boy was to be hers and Lucy, the girl was to be mine. Surprise, the cats had different ideas. Long story short, Linus (the boy) is my cat and Lucy is now Lucille (the girl) and is Katrina’s cat.

Linus

Linus is a little lazy and a lot fat. His story at another time.

I have to admit that Lucille is the most remarkable animal. She has very expressionistic eyes. You can always

Los Angeles to Murfreesboro Tennessee? What were you thinking?

The daily challenges of two married California urbanites that think Tennessee is the place you odda be!

By: Dick and Katrina

Once upon a time in a place called LaLa land, better known as Los Angeles, a couple fell in love and got married. When they met in 1997, Richard was in the process of getting through a divorce, lived in an 1,800 SF, one-story home on a 10,000 SF lot in Upland, CA. He dressed in business suits five days a week for his job as a VP and Planning Consultant for an engineering, planning and surveying firm in Ontario, CA. His three children, all in their early 20′s were living at home. Also living in the household were one Miniature Schnauzer and one cat. Richard’s hobbies were following the NASCAR races and enjoying his Corvette. He was very active in the community. He had just finished a term as President of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and was the current Lt. Gov. for Kiwanis Division 15.

Katrina lived in a similar home in Chino Hills, CA. She also dressed up in business suits five days a week. Her job was VP of a bank and a commercial underwriter. Katrina’s hobbies were occasionally showing her dogs and spending many hours in community activities especially as President of the Chino Hills Kiwanis Club. Katrina’s real love was her three dogs (Whippets) Perry, Fraser and Niles.

As all good stories go Richard and Katrina were married in 1999 and began there new life together in Upland on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Their lives were busy with work and play. They showed Katrina’s dogs, began collecting Corvettes and vintage Muscle Cars, they did all the typical Southern California things but soon realized something was missing. They both grew up with the opportunity to roam through open land and experience nature. They began to look for such a place in Southern CA.
